Indiana men’s basketball officially introduced former West Virginia head coach Darian DeVries as the program’s next head coach on Wednesday at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
DeVries takes over in Bloomington following a one-year stint at WVU, taking the Mountaineers to a 19-13 season and just shy of an NCAA Tournament showing in his first year, following a 9-23 overall record the season prior to taking on the role. This came after six 20-win seasons and three NCAA Tournament appearances in six years at the helm at Drake University.
Hear from IU President Pamela Whitten, Athletic Director Scott Dolson, and the Hoosiers’ 31st head coach below.
“I’m honored, I’m humbled, and I’m thrilled to be standing here today as the head coach of Indiana men’s basketball. This is a dream come true for me, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to lead this storied program.”
“I want to thank President Pamela Whitten, Athletic Director Scott Dolson, and the entire search committee for believing in me and giving me this chance. I’m excited to work with them and the entire Indiana Athletics staff to bring championships to Bloomington.”
“As I stand here today, I’m reminded of the rich tradition and history of Indiana basketball. From Branch McCracken to Bob Knight, to Mike Davis, and Tom Crean, this program has been built on a foundation of excellence, and I’m committed to upholding that standard.”
“My coaching philosophy is centered around building strong relationships with our players, creating a culture of accountability and toughness, and developing a playing style that is exciting, fast-paced, and attacking. We’ll be a team that plays with passion, energy, and a never-say-die attitude.”
“I’m a Midwest guy, born and raised in Iowa, and I understand the values and the work ethic of this region. I’m excited to recruit and develop players from this area, as well as from around the country, who embody those same values.”
“Our staff will be dedicated to helping our players grow and develop, both on and off the court. We’ll be a program that prioritizes academic excellence, social responsibility, and community engagement.”
“I know that there’s a lot of excitement and anticipation around this program, and I’m committed to delivering a product that our fans can be proud of. We’ll work tirelessly to build a team that competes at the highest level, and that makes Hoosier Nation proud.”
“I’m eager to get started, to meet our players, and to begin building the foundation for a championship program. I’m honored to be a part of this Indiana basketball family, and I’m excited to see what the future holds.”
“Thank you again to everyone who has supported me on this journey. I’m ready to get to work, and I’m excited to see what we can achieve together. Go Hoosiers!”
