David Ornstein has provided a personal view on how he things the contract stand-off between Mohamed Salah and Liverpool will go.
After the Reds convincingly dispatched Real Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday evening, all the focus and attention should go to that historic triumph.
But due to the contract situation at the club, unfortunately we are forced to acknowledge and discuss contract news.
At 32, Salah continues to deliver exceptional performances, with his 12 goals and 10 assists in 19 appearances this season proving all the evidence needed to prove this.
Salah’s current contract, signed in July 2022, made him the highest-paid player in Liverpool’s history, with a reported weekly wage of £350,000. Renewing his contract would likely require maintaining or increasing this figure, potentially disrupting the club’s wage structure.
But the Saudi Pro League’s interest in Salah is well-documented.
In September 2023, Liverpool reportedly turned down a £150 million bid from Al-Ittihad, underscoring Salah’s immense value to the club
This rejection highlights Liverpool’s commitment to retaining their star player, yet it also signals the financial allure that could tempt both the club and Salah in future negotiations.
Amid all the speculation, a further update has been provided by David Ornstein.
What did David Ornstein say about Mohamed Salah?
Speaking on the Sky Sports Backpages podcast, the reliable transfer reporter shared his opinion, and although just an opinion it is likely formulated with information he knows and receives:
“I suspect they’re going to come to a compromise. I don’t know, it’s just my prediction.”
“Because he is so good and despite his age, he’s showing no signs of slowing physically, technically, and you really do back him when he says that he feels that he’s got a few more years left in him at the very top level.”
“I can’t argue with that, and it’s just whether they can reach a compromise on clearly, what he expects to be paid and the length of contract, and what Liverpool and FSG in particular – who seem to have a policy over the age of 30 – are prepared to go to.”
It’s a big story, and not ideal for the club on the eve of such a massive match against Real Madrid and then Manchester City on Sunday.”
“But at the same time, we’ve kind of been here before with Salah and it’s worked out amicable in the end. I wouldn’t be surprised if it does again here.”
With an insider so obviously expecting the Egyptian to remain past this season, it can only be construed as a positive update for Liverpool
The Athletic reporter also maintained this stance of Salah staying at Liverpool in previous updates earlier this week.
