The Hungarian has struggled to reach his early season heights.

Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai immediately hit the ground running following his summer switch from RB Leipzig.

The Hungary international was part of a major midfield rebrand at Anfield, with Jurgen Klopp also strengthening that department through Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo.

There was plenty of pressure on the new recruits to perform given the gap that was left by the likes of club captain Jordan Henderson and defensive midfield ace Fabinho, with Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also moving on.

There was, however, added pressure on Szoboszlai given how he was the most expensive of the new faces at £60million.

But he more than lived up to that challenge in his early Reds career, with Klopp having no option but to hand the midfielder regular starts.

More recently, however, Szoboszlai has been nowhere near those levels, with the 23-year-old often invisible on the pitch.

Here are three potential reasons why the Hungarian has suffered a major drop in form:

Injury issues

Whether it be the intensity of matches or the busy schedule, every single Premier League club have had their injury issues this season.

And Liverpool have certainly been heavily impacted, with Szoboszlai missing several games this season due to a hamstring injury.

He was absent for all four of his club’s league matches in February, along with the League Cup final clash versus Chelsea, and simply hasn’t found any form since then.

The player’s mind may not even be in the right place either, with Szoboszlai publicly expressing his anger at the club’s medical staff for forcing him to stay away from the pitch.

Overall Liverpool form

It is no secret that the entire Liverpool squad have suffered a massive overall drop in form, with Szoboszlai just a small part of the picture.

The midfielder is undoubtedly a player who can win matches on his own, having proven his maturity despite his youth, primarily for Hungary but also at club level.

However, Szoboszlai certainly can’t turn the tide on his own, particularly with Klopp largely using him from the bench during this slump.

Standards set too high

Perhaps it is a combination of the above factors, along with one very realistic possibility that the midfield ace simply set his standards too high from the very beginning.

The Hungarian immediately took to the Klopp project, constantly chipping in with goals and assists and stellar outings before his injury problems.

Szoboszlai currently boasts tallies of seven goals and four assists in all comps, many of which have been very special, but his goal involvements have unsurprisingly dried up recently due to that lack in form and indeed lack of playing time.

It’s not quite the finish to his season one would have expected.
