Dominik Szoboszlai left Liverpool insiders ‘surprised’ after completing £60m transfer

Dominik Szoboszlai has reportedly left key figures within Liverpool “surprised” at just how good he is.

The Hungary captain signed for Liverpool in the summer for a hefty £60million fee, making him the club’s fourth most expensive player of all time. But the Reds – who were in dire need of a new midfield star – are already reaping the benefits.

That’s thanks to Szoboszlai hitting the ground running, with the 23-year-old’s athleticism and ability in possession meaning he has topped Liverpool’s leaderboards in a whole range of different stats. And former club hero Jan Molby thinks the central midfielder has even exceeded expectations since his arrival from RB Leipzig.

Molby told the Liverpool ECHO: “I knew he was a good player but it was just a question of how good and how quick [he could adapt]. We’ve seen a lot of players come in from the German Bundesliga and struggle to settle.

“Some have had to make the journey back because they haven’t quite made it so it was just a case of seeing how good he could be in the Premier League. I knew playing for Hungary and in the Bundesliga he’d been superb.

“Obviously from day one he has hit the ground running because, I think it’s fair to say, he appears to be one of those special talents. He is capable of taking all the steps up in his stride and proving what he can do.

“I would even go as far as saying that possibly even those within the club who were part of signing him might have been surprised at how good and how good and how quickly he has shown himself to be.”

In the 18 matches Szoboszlai has played for Jurgen Klopp’s side, he has registered the most final-third passes, chances created and the most touches out of any of his team-mates. He also has a goal and two assists in the Premier League.

Klopp’s men look far more equipped to mount a title challenge this season than last thanks to his addition, along with Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis MacAllister. Following Saturday’s comeback 1-1 draw at Manchester City, they are now two points off league leaders Arsenal.
