The fallout from Manchester United’s early exit from the Champions League and European football could have far-reaching consequences for some of their underperforming stars.
The Red Devils lose1-0 at Bayern Munich thanks to a Kingsley Coman goal to safely exit the European competition after Manchester United suffered their fourth defeat in six games.
It was also the club’s sixth defeat at home in all competitions so far this season. The British businessman will control all transfers in and out of Old Trafford as new investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe moves to sell a minority stake in the club.
Behind the scenes, Ratcliffe is believed to have criticized a number of key United signings for failing to live up to their initial promises. According to reports in Spain, the first man on the firing line could be goalkeeper Andre Onana.
The Cameroon goalkeeper cost United £47.1m, making him the third most expensive goalkeeper in football history. But after a measly 15 goals in just six UCL games, Ratcliffe has seen enough and United will be hoping to secure promotion at the first opportunity.
Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili is now claimed to be the first choice to replace Onana in 2024 for a €40m strike. Manchester United are competing with Chelsea for the Georgian goalkeeper.
It is unclear whether the 6ft 7in Georgia goalkeeper will be moved in January, but Ratcliffe is understood to be keen on an early move in the summer transfer window.
Mamardashvili has established himself as one of the best players in his two and a half years with Los Che. His value has increased during this period and is currently valued at between €35 and €40 million for the Spanish side.
His performance also caught the attention of Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino. He is looking to recruit a new starting player and is also trying to revamp the goalkeeping department. But with Valencia needing to strike a balance to help rebuild the squad, United could make the first move.
The 23-year-old is contracted at Valencia until the summer of 2027 and has kept 23 clean sheets in 79 appearances in all competitions alongside Ruben Baraja.
