Despite the Reds missing out on the title in Jurgen Klopp’s final season, Liverpool supporters should be largely pleased with the progress of their side over the past nine months.
After Liverpool limped their way to a fifth placed and trophy-less finish last season, a Carabao Cup triumph and third place finish means that they’ll end this campaign with silverware and Champions League football secured for next season.
However, the collapse of their title challenge ultimately points to the limits of what the Reds can achieve with their current squad.
The last several weeks saw Liverpool’s midfield struggle to establish a foothold while the wastefulness from their forwards in the final third cost them crucial points as Manchester City and Arsenal pulled clear.
CEO of Football Michael Edwards and Liverpool’s upper management have big decisions to make about certain players this summer. I’ve shared my thoughts about who they should keep, sell, loan or at least consider selling below:
Allison Becker
Allison’s standing as one of, if not the best keeper in world football, was once again clear this season. The keeper bailed his side out repeatedly when their defense switched off and Liverpool owe a good share of the points they’ve won to his spectacular saves. He is indispensable.
Verdict: Keep
Caoimhin Kelleher
Kelleher has proven a fine deputy to Allison. Liverpool’s second choice keeper stepped up when the Brazilian missed a series of matches through injury and his dependability helped to keep the Reds’ title chase alive for as long as it was.
Undoubtedly worth keeping around as there are few better backup keepers, but should an offer come in, the club owe it to him to pursue an opportunity for first team football.
Verdict: Consider selling if player wishes to move.
Adrian
Did not make a single appearance for Liverpool this season and has not since the 2022 Community Shield. It’s difficult to see a way for him back into the side, even as a backup.
