Even Jalen Hurts’ ex-teammate doesn’t think he’s an ‘elite’ quarterback

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was disrespected by one of his former teammates this week — at least that’s what the fan base in Philly believes.

A few days ago, the Eagles released six-time Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay with a post-June 1 designation. That move will save the Super Bowl champions a little over $4 million in cap space. During his five-year run with the Eagles, Slay had 272 tackles, 56 pass break-ups and nine interceptions.

During a recent podcast episode, Slay talked about the current state of quarterback play in the NFL. He said there are only four elite players at that position right now.

Despite spending several years with Hurts in Philly, Slay didn’t put the dual-threat quarterback in his top four.

“The elite goes to the top four guys. That’s how I do elites,” Slay said. “For me, elite in the quarterback world goes to Joe Burrow, [Patrick] Mahomes, Lamar [Jackson], and Josh Allen.”

It’s tough to argue with Slay’s list, but Philly fans understandably have an issue with it.

This isn’t the first time this week that Slay has apparently disrespected a teammate. He recently snubbed Eagles safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson when talking about the team’s leadership in the secondary.

“I’m going to be surprised if Reed and them guys like Reed can, you know, advance these guys. Reed been around me and a lot of other veterans that been here before. And I’m sure he could lead that group the right way,” Slay said, via Sportskeeda. “Yes, I do. Because, uh, I do got a great leadership role in that, in that secondary room. I’m going to be surprised if Reed and them guys like Reed can, you know, advance these guys. Reed been around me and a lot of other veterans that been here before. And I’m sure he could lead that group the right way.”

Gardner-Johnson called out Slay on social media. The veteran cornerback later explained that he doesn’t have any beef with his former teammates.

“We just won a Super Bowl together,” Slay wrote. “I do not have no problem or hate towards bra. Reed is in our leadership council which is y I said what I said. I would expect him to be the next guy up. It’s nothing but love on my end if u really kno me.. Yall have a blessed day.”

As for Hurts, he hasn’t said anything yet about Slay’s quarterback rankings.
