Former England manager names the Premier League title race ‘surprise package’

It’s a three-horse race.

Sam Allardyce believes that Liverpool have surprised with their showing in the Premier League title race this year.

Last year, Liverpool underwhelmed as Manchester City and Arsenal pushed one another hard, before Pep Guardiola’s men won out as part of a famous treble success.

This year, despite Jurgen Klopp announcing he would be leaving at the end of the season, it is the Anfield side who have taken the lead in the hunt for the title.

Speaking to William Hill, Allardyce expressed his surprise that Liverpool were challenging.

“There are eight games left now and a lot can still happen before the end of the season,” he said. “All three of the teams in the title race will be thinking that they can’t afford to lose a single game between now and the end of the season.

“They might get away with one draw but I think they’ll have to win seven out of eight.

“My biggest surprise is not with Arsenal, because they were there last year. I’m really surprised with the way that Liverpool have responded to this season.

“They’ve had a lot of academy players come through and you could argue that their squad isn’t at the same level it was a couple of years ago, but they’ve dug out wins from poor performances.

“Manchester City this season have been easier to score against than ever before, but if they put that right then I expect them to go on and win the league.”
