To mark Liverpool FC’s Black History Month, Joe Gomez talks about the role models of color who shaped him and the importance of representation in his personal and professional life.
The Reds defender has had many inspirations for him, from his father and the coach at his first football club, Ten Am Bee, to America’s first black president, Barack Obama, and defender and civil rights activist Colin Kaepernick.
On what representation means, Gomez said, “I think it’s really important as a young black person to have representation and black role models to aspire to and get their principles and morals from.”Gomez added about her father Augustus and the influence he had on her life: “As a child, he was larger than life.
