But while Manchester United were brimming with talent at the time, the club still seemed hungry for more. The same goes for Steven Gerrard. Speaking on Sky Sports’ Stick to Football podcast, Neville revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson once considered bringing Gerrard to Old Trafford and asked to speak to the Liverpool midfielder about it.“I remember Sir Alex asking me… “When I went into Steven Gerrard’s room in the England team and asked him to join United,” Neville said.”It seemed a bit of a hopeless situation.
What year is 2004? He was about to go to Chelsea and Sir Alex called me and said he was nervous. I think what he meant was that I was going to pick him up and bring him back over the Eastern Rand. 2004 was a dark time for Liverpool fans and Steven Gerrard. But it is clear that Liverpool captain Gerrard has always retained a passion for the club and that loyalty ultimately linked him to Anfield.
Over the years, Steven Gerrard and Gary Neville have had a fierce rivalry. Those days between Manchester United and Liverpool don’t always bring back fond memories for the Liverpool captain, but there are some highlights. From kissing the camera in the 4-1 defeat at Old Trafford to his incredible goal in the 2003 League Cup Final. All in all, unfortunately, it has to be said that Gary Neville kept most of the spoils during his very successful time at Manchester United.
Neville decided to broach the subject, but received a very specific answer. “I went to Stevie and it was really fast! He said: “I will never leave Liverpool and my family will never leave Liverpool.” That’s what he told me.
