In a heartfelt act of generosity and community pride, Seattle Mariners legend Ken Griffey Jr. has pledged $10 million to support poverty relief programs in three underprivileged regions of Washington State. The donation marks one of the most significant personal contributions ever made by a former MLB player in the Pacific Northwest.
The funds will be directed toward Pierce County, Yakima Valley, and Spokane, areas struggling with high poverty rates, particularly among families and children. The initiative will support programs in education, youth development, food access, and affordable housing.
Griffey Jr., a Hall of Famer and 13-time All-Star, said the donation reflects his lasting bond with the people of Washington and a desire to give back to the communities that embraced him throughout his baseball career.
“Washington gave me more than just a place to play—it gave me a home,” Griffey said in a public statement. “This is about hope, dignity, and opportunity for people who’ve gone unseen for too long.”
The donation will be channeled through the newly launched “Junior’s Journey Foundation”, named in honor of Griffey’s nickname and career. The foundation will partner with local organizations to maximize impact and ensure resources go directly to the families and youth most in need.
In Pierce County, funds will boost after-school and mentorship programs for at-risk youth. In Yakima Valley, the initiative will address the needs of farmworker communities, including school resources and health care access.
Spokane will benefit from the creation of a youth empowerment center that provides sports, education, and vocational training opportunities in one safe space.
Griffey has long been active in community work, but this initiative represents his most ambitious effort to date. He made clear that this was not a one-time act of charity, but the beginning of a broader, long-term mission.
“This isn’t just about money—it’s about building something sustainable,” Griffey said. “It’s about giving families a foundation and giving kids a shot at their dreams.”
Community leaders and former teammates lauded the announcement. “Ken’s heart is as big as his swing,” said former Mariners teammate Edgar Martinez. “This is going to change lives.”
As the Mariners continue to fight for playoff success, Griffey’s off-the-field legacy stands tall, showing that even years after retirement, a true legend can still knock it out of the park for his community.
