New York Giants Part Ways with Quarterback Daniel Jones
The New York Giants have officially released quarterback Daniel Jones, ending his six-year tenure as the team’s starter. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Jones had requested to be released, and team owner John Mara granted his wish.
In a statement, Mara expressed his appreciation for Jones’ contributions to the team, saying, “We hold Daniel in high regard and have a great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future.”
Jones’ release comes after he was benched by head coach Brian Daboll and demoted to third string. The move was likely made to avoid triggering Jones’ $23 million injury guarantee in 2025.
The release benefits both Jones and the team, allowing the 27-year-old quarterback to seek a new team while the Giants save $30.5 million that would have been paid to Jones next season.
Jones reflected on his time with the Giants, saying, “The opportunity to play for the New York Giants was truly a dream come true.” During his tenure, Jones went 24-44-1 as a starter, including a 3-13 record after signing a four-year, $160 million extension in 2022.
Despite his struggles, Jones leaves the organization as the quarterback with the fifth-most passing yards in franchise history and the first to win a playoff game since Eli Manning led the team to victory in Super Bowl XLVI.
