Arsenal great Martin Keown has urged Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold to play more in midfield, comparing him to his former captain Steven Gerrard.
Alexander-Arnold, 25, was in fine form during the FA Cup third round tie against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday (January 7). The tempo of the game was dictated by the standby captain, especially in the second half of an exciting away game. Keown praised Alexander-Arnold after Liverpool’s FA Cup win against the players and said the defender needs to be higher up the pitch. He told BBC Match of the Day:“It’s time to get him out of here, especially internationally, and give him the opportunity to play in the middle of the pitch where he wants to play.
He played there when he was young. That guy really is Steven Gerrard, isn’t he? You won’t play Gerrard at right back. “Now he’s on the right flank… now the right-back has developed, so things are different, but ultimately I think he has to play in midfield.”England legend Gary Lineker also praised the right-back.”Actually, there won’t be any problems in defense, of course in midfield. “There is no better passer in football… especially in the English game.
Keown, who helped Arsenal win three Premier League titles, concluded:“He’s like a quarterback, right? “The way he got results from a central position shone today.”Alexander-Arnold, whose current contract expires in June 2025, completed 43 of 55 passes and created two chances for the Red. He won 2 out of 3 duels, 6 out of 11 duels and even scored once. Trent Alexander-Arnold shares his thoughts on Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Arsenal.
Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold gave his honest thoughts on his club’s FA Cup final victory over Mikel Arteta’s side in a post-match chat. He said Many players were missing today… national team players (Mohammed Salah and Wataru Endo) and Virgil (Van Dijk) were also missing and there were many injuries. I came here with one goal: “It was just a matter of winning and coming out on top in the next round and we did that.”Liverpool, who have won 21 of their 30 games this season, have 46% possession and 12 shots on target, compared to Arsenal’s 18 on Sunday. And Alexander-Arnold has two goals and eight assists in 25 games in all competitions, this campaign.
