“HISTORY IN THE WRONG LANE: Saints QB Derek Carr on Brink of NFL Record for Most Sacks Taken – Can He Break the Curse?”
New Orleans, LA – As the New Orleans Saints prepare for their upcoming game, quarterback Derek Carr is on the verge of making NFL history – but not in a good way. Carr is closing in on the record for most sacks taken by a quarterback in a single season, a dubious distinction that no player wants to achieve.
Currently, Carr has been sacked an astonishing 48 times this season, just six shy of the NFL record held by David Carr (no relation), who was sacked 54 times in 2002 while playing for the Houston Texans. The Saints’ porous offensive line has been a major contributor to Carr’s struggles, as he has been under constant pressure from opposing defenders.
“It’s not something I’m proud of, that’s for sure,” Carr said in a recent interview. “As a quarterback, you want to be able to make plays and lead your team to victories, not get sacked repeatedly. But I’m not giving up. I’m going to keep fighting and trying to make the best of a tough situation.”
Despite his resilience, Carr’s struggles have raised concerns about his long-term viability as the Saints’ starting quarterback. The team has invested heavily in Carr, signing him to a four-year, $150 million contract extension last offseason. However, if Carr continues to take a pounding behind the Saints’ leaky O-line, it may be difficult for him to survive the season, let alone the length of his contract.
The Saints’ coaching staff has acknowledged the need to provide better protection for Carr, but it remains to be seen whether they can make the necessary adjustments to prevent him from breaking the sack record.
“We’re working hard to improve our pass protection, but it’s not just about the O-line,” said Saints head coach Dennis Allen. “We need to do a better job of getting the ball out quickly, and our receivers need to do a better job of getting open. It’s a team effort, and we’re all working together to try and get this fixed.”
As the Saints head into their next game, all eyes will be on Carr and the O-line. Can they somehow manage to keep Carr upright and prevent him from making unwanted history? Or will Carr become the new record-holder for most sacks taken in a season? Stay tuned to find out.
