Hornets’ Cooper Flagg heartbreak just worsened after ‘unreal’ Mavericks preview

The Charlotte Hornets are likely feeling the sting of disappointment after missing out on Cooper Flagg in the NBA draft lottery. To make matters worse, a recent preview of Flagg’s skills with the Dallas Mavericks has left the franchise wondering what could have been.

According to a league source, Flagg was “unreal” and a “complete beast” during his workout with the Mavs. This impressive performance has only added to the speculation that he’s the real deal, a generational talent that could have been the missing piece for the Hornets.

The Hornets had the highest odds of securing the first overall pick but fell to fourth. With Flagg likely going first overall, it’s hard not to wonder what could have been. Flagg’s abilities make him a perfect fit for the Hornets, with his lights-out shooting, playmaking ability, and defensive prowess. He has worked on his weakness, improving his 3-point shooting from 22.2% to 44.7% in his final 26 college games.

Flagg’s ability to create his own shot and play off his teammates would have been perfect for a team like the Hornets. His defensive skills would have covered for LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller’s deficiencies, providing a strong foundation for the team. The Hornets would have had a strong foundation to build around, and Flagg’s presence would have likely elevated the entire team.

The Hornets will have to settle for other prospects, with VJ Edgecombe, Tre Johnson, and Kon Knueppel being potential targets. While it’s disappointing to miss out on Flagg, drafting a bust would be a bigger blow to the franchise. The Hornets will aim to make the most of their draft pick and build around their existing talent.

As the draft approaches, the Hornets’ front office will need to make a strategic decision to ensure the team’s future success. With Flagg likely going first overall, the focus shifts to finding the next best fit. Will the Hornets find a gem in the draft, or will they continue to build around their current roster? Only time will tell.
