Jurgen Klopp has earned his way into the pantheon of bootroom greats with his incredible trophy haul at Liverpool during his nine years at Anfield.
Liverpool are preparing to give Jurgen Klopp one huge send-off in his final match as manager following an historic tenure that concludes with a home match versus Wolves on Sunday.
The Reds reached unprecedented heights under the German, making it to four European finals and going through a whole Premier League season losing just once – as well as, of course, his huge trophy haul.
Klopp won the lot at Liverpool, clasping hands on all of the English game’s elite silverware during his nine-year stay. Sunday’s fixture will be his 489th match as Liverpool boss and he will finish his reign with a win ratio of more than 60 per cent.
The 56-year-old has completed his mission in turning Liverpool fans from doubters into believers and this weekend will be an emotional occasion for all those inside, and outside of, Anfield.
Supporters will be reflecting on the 56-year-old’s achievements including all of the eight trophies he has lifted.
2019 – Champions League, Club World Cup and Super Cup
Klopp’s first trophy was perhaps the biggest cup of all. The 2-0 Champions League final win over Tottenham erased the memories of the heartbreaking defeat to Real Madrid the year prior.
The win in the newly-opened Metropolitano Stadium – home to Atletico Madrid – was Klopp’s third Champions League final, having also made the showpiece in 2013 with Borussia Dortmund. It was also his fourth European final after seeing Liverpool lose to Sevilla in the 2016 Europa League.
Then, in August, followed the UEFA Super Cup win over Chelsea in Turkey thanks to Adrian’s penalty shoot-out save to see Liverpool lift the trophy for the third time in 18 years.
December saw Liverpool beat Flamengo in the Club World Cup final, the first time the club had won the competition.
2020 – Premier League
While the Champions League is the biggest cup triumph, there is no surpassing the significance of the unforgettable maiden Premier League title. The Reds were cantering to the crown when the country was put into lockdown in March due to the Covid pandemic.
When the season finally resumed, Liverpool secured the title and took advantage of the saddening barring of fans from the stands to lift the trophy on the Kop in what was a poignant moment in the club’s history.
Liverpool were Premier League champions and fans outside Anfield were going to celebrate.
2022 – FA Cup, League Cup and Community Shield
This was perhaps the season in which Klopp exerted every drop out of his squad as the Reds came a point and a final away from the quadruple. The League Cup penalty win over Chelsea was followed by a rematch in the FA Cup final.
Kostas Tsimikas wrote his name into history books when he fired home the winning spot kick to hand Klopp his sixth trophy as Liverpool boss. But for a Thibaut Cortois masterclass, Liverpool may well have won the Champions League too but instead suffered a 1-0 defeat to Real Madrid, again.
Energy had been sapped after Liverpool lost out on the title to Manchester City by a point for the second time, having also done so in 2019. The team visibly suffered from mental fatigue the season after.
2024 – League Cup
Just over a month after he announced his forthcoming exit, Klopp lifted what would be the final trophy of his Liverpool career. Once more, the opponents were Chelsea and the game went into extra time with the score 0-0.
But this time, a Virgil van Dijk header stopped the match from going to penalties after Klopp had entrusted a plethora of academy graduates to win the final amid a spate of injuries to senior players.
Klopp has made sure the future is bright and sits in a good place by the time he doffs his cap to the Kop for the final time this weekend.
