I don’t regret rejecting Liverpool – I was a bit uncomfortable with everything

Martin Zubimendi has insisted he has no regrets about turning down a move to Liverpool.

The Reds were keen to sign the midfielder in the summer transfer window. Arne Slot believes Zubimendi could bring more control to Liverpool’s midfield and the club were prepared to pay his £52m release clause in his contract with Real Sociedad.

But the Spain international, who helped his country to Euro 2024 glory, has decided to join Anfield. Zubimendi wanted to stay at his boyhood club Sociedad and Liverpool have ended their interest. The 25-year-old regrets not joining the Reds and wants to rekindle interest in the club in January, as the club have endured a difficult start to the season. The San Sebastian side have won just two of their first eight La Liga games.

However, Zubimendi has dismissed the claims and said he is happy with his decision. Via Notias de Gipuzkoa, he said: “Of course I have no regrets, I can’t think like that after four or five games at the start of the season. I made the decision internally, I thought it was the best thing to do, the results don’t affect me. I see the potential in this team, just watch them train. I’m looking forward to a good season. »

“Finally, as in every transfer window, there are always unforeseen events. This summer was my turn. These are the things that happen and we need to manage the best. It is true that I was a little uncomfortable with everything, especially the noise, but in the end I isolated myself and made the decision that seemed right to me.”
