Darwin Nunez may be one of the most polarising players the Premier League has ever seen.
In some people’s minds, the Uruguayan is a world-class striker who can change a game in an instant, while others believe he’s a flat-track bully who is wildly inconsistent.
Speaking on Premier League Productions, Jermaine Beckford has been discussing Nunez and his style of play, and he’s noticed that Nunez is a player who struggles when he’s given time to think about what he’s doing, claiming that his first touch can be way off when he gets in his own head thinking about what he’s going to do next.
Nunez is irrational
Beckford spoke about the striker and his technique.
“Can I tell you something about Darwin that I have noticed. When he has to think about what he’s doing his irrational, his touch is really crazy, his shooting is wild, but when he’s acting on instinct, he’s sharp, that’s something that has been a big improvement,” Beckford said.
Needs to sort it
Beckford is right, Nunez can be a really hit and miss player, and this is something he needs to address.
Liverpool are a team that look to dominate the ball. If everything is going well, their players will have time and space to think about what they want to do and pull it off.
However, Nunez is at his best when he’s not given time, he’s a frantic player who plays his best football when he’s rushed into things rather than wanting to play a calm style.
The contract between Nunez and someone like Roberto Firmino is so stark, and while both players can be effective, it has to be said that Jurgen Klopp’s side do need a striker who is a bit calmer than Nunez is in these moments where he gets time to think about what he’s doing.
