Jaylen Brown Reflects on Facing Marcus Smart: “It Felt Weird but Great”

The Boston Celtics experienced an emotional and competitive showdown when they faced the Memphis Grizzlies over the weekend, marking the first time that long-time Celtic Marcus Smart played against his former team. Despite a valiant effort, the Celtics fell short, dropping their fifth game of the season to their old friend.

For star guard Jaylen Brown, seeing Smart in an opponent’s jersey was both surreal and touching. “It’s weird. But it was great. Marcus is a family member at this point,” Brown shared after the game. Cameras captured the heartfelt moment when Brown and Smart embraced on the court, exemplifying the deep bond the two players forged during Smart’s nine-year tenure in Boston.

Smart, who was a key part of the Celtics’ journey to their 18th NBA Championship, had bittersweet reflections on watching his former teammates succeed without him. “After they won against Indiana to head to the Finals, I told Jaylen, ‘Go win it now,’” Smart revealed. “He texted me back saying he got me, appreciated and loved me, and wished I was there but said he’s gonna go handle business.”

The scrappy guard, celebrated for his defensive tenacity and leadership, left a lasting legacy in Boston. Smart earned the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award in 2021-22, three All-Defensive Team selections, and cemented his place as a fan favorite with his grit and passion. In his 581 games with the Celtics, Smart averaged 10.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.6 steals per game.

Smart’s return to the TD Garden brought a warm reception from fans who honored his contributions. Although the trade that sent him to Memphis was a difficult pill to swallow for many, it ultimately paved the way for Boston’s 2024 championship run, a triumph Smart celebrated from afar.

With the Celtics set to face the Detroit Pistons next, the team looks to bounce back while cherishing the connections that make basketball more than just a game.
