A while back, probably in 2009 if memory serves, we got a tour of Duke’s practice facility. It was really nice in so many ways, highly impressive.
When we got to the court, there was a guy putting up shots we didn’t recognize at first, but it was Kyle Singler. He was radically thinner than he had been the year before, when he was needed in the frontcourt. That year, Duke basically had two guards, Nolan Smith and Jon Scheyer, and Singler was needed as a third option. So after beefing up the year before to help out inside, he came back thin to help the backcourt. That was Singler that we knew, if only from a distance. He was focused on his team and winning. He was the last guy you thought would have serious trouble later in life.
We don’t know what’s happened to him, but he posted some videos last year (we think) and was also arrested in October and charged with one misdemeanor count of assault and battery in the presence of a child. Allegedly, he assaulted his girlfriend and the mother of his daughter.
Now there’s another video out and he makes some disturbing claims, among them that he is homeless and that his daughter “is being sexually, physically, emotionally, spiritually abused.”
It’s unsettling to see him struggling and we don’t know why it’s happening. We do know a lot of people would probably be happy to help him if it’s possible. Hopefully, he gets the help he needs.
