LeBron James reportedly likely to opt into contract for next season

LeBron James has been a Laker for seven seasons and he has to decide this summer whether he’ll make it eight.

The power lies completely in his hands as he has a player option for $52.6 million for the 2025-26 season.

So far, LeBron has stated he doesn’t have an answer on whether he’ll be returning to play next season. His agent, Rich Paul, has shared similar sentiments, saying he has “no idea” what James will do this summer.

While no one in LeBron’s camp has a significant update, Shams Charania of ESPN appeared on the Pat McAfee Show and stated that the King returning to L.A. by opting into his player option is currently the plan.

This comes after a recent report from Shams where he stated that LeBron was unlikely to take a pay cut but could opt into his deal with the Lakers.

LeBron getting paid over $50 million next year is certainly not a pay cut. If he comes back at that dollar amount, it would be the most he’s ever made in a single NBA season.

While he’s the oldest player in the NBA and certainly on a decline, it’s a historically gradual one.

He finished last season averaging 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.2 assists per game. LeBron also made the All-NBA Second Team this past season and remains the clear leader for the Lakers.

With LeBron returning, the Lakers would be able to focus on addressing the other gaps in their roster and build out a team around LeBron and Luka Dončić.

Still, as Shams has said, nothing is for certain just yet.

President of Basketball Operations Rob Pelinka will still be in conversation with James to ensure not just that he comes back next season, but that he might still do so at a lower price. If LeBron opts in at his current number, it’ll be difficult for the Lakers to remain under the tax.

So far, though, all signs are pointing to Bron returning and giving it a go with Luka as his partner in crime for a full season.
