It’s a huge week for Liverpool, with the Reds hosting Manchester City on Sunday in what could be a potential Premier League title decider. Meanwhile, work continues behind the scenes to find a successor to Jürgen Klopp, as well as a new sporting director. Here’s a round-up of the latest Liverpool news.
Liverpool could pursue former AC Milan director of football Frederic Massara as three alternatives to Michael Edwards have reportedly been identified. As well as needing to find a new manager, the Reds are in the hunt for a new sporting director after Jörg Schmadtke following the January transfer window.
Edwards has been linked with a potential return to Anfield, having previously held the role until his exit in 2022. Liverpool is set to make a second offer, as per the ECHO, having already been turned down once. While a return hasn’t been completely ruled out yet, it does appear unlikely. Therefore, according to The Independent, three alternatives have been identified.
Among them is Massara, who was named Sporting Director of the Year at the 2022 Globe Soccer Awards for his work with AC Milan. Richard Hughes, who is set to leave Bournemouth at the end of the season, and Nice’s Florent Ghisolfi have also attracted FSG’s attention.
A move for Ghisolfi could be tricky though, with Nice’s owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe now holding a stake in Manchester United. Hughes, meanwhile, could come under consideration for Newcastle given his working relationship with Eddie Howe.
Massara therefore could be the most viable option, with Liverpool ideally getting an appointment wrapped up soon. As well as finding a new manager, there are also the contracts of Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah to be sorted, with all three set to see their deals expire in 2025.
Reports of interest from Liverpool in Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala have been dismissed in Germany. The 21-year-old has recently been linked with a move to Anfield amid suggestions that he has turned down the offer of a new contract at the Allianz Arena (as per the Daily Star).
