Liverpool legend quit the wrong way, Trent Alexander-Arnold knows what to do if he wants to leave’

Richard Keys has put his two cents into the Trent Alexander-Arnold contract debate, and believes the Liverpool right-back should come out publicly and say that he is leaving the club.

Of course, there has been no concrete indication that the England star has made a final decision on his future, but that seemingly isn’t relevant to controversial TV anchor Keys, who believes it’s important for Alexander-Arnold to leave Liverpool in the right way.

The defender is out of contract at Anfield at the end of the season, and has been heavily linked with a transfer to Real Madrid. Keys referenced Steve McManaman’s move to Madrid in 1999, and how many Liverpool fans never forgave him after he ran his contract down at Anfield in order to move to the Bernabeu on a free transfer.

There’s no way of leaving Liverpool in a good way,” Keys said. “Steve [McManaman] left the wrong way. He’s never been forgiven, by the way. I would have much more respect for Alexander-Arnold if he sat there and said ‘I have given my all, I have given everything to this football club, and this football club has made me who I am today.

“I am in a place where I can make a choice about my life and my professional career, and it would be impossible for me to say no to Real Madrid’. I think Liverpool fans would respect that more than if he sulked about, pretending he’s not, and refusing to answer questions.

How does he pretend his image by pretending he’s not going, then walking in June for nothing? We know! What are you hiding? How does this protect your image? If he has an intent to stay then now is the time to say ‘I’m flattered by the interest by Real Madrid but my heart is at Liverpool, and there’s no way I could see myself playing for any other club in the world, so I’m going to sign a new deal.’”
