Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic ‘set’ for huge call on future as ultimatum set.

The Serbian Football Association are reportedly devising a plan to try and persuade Liverpool’s Stefan Bajcetic to switch his allegiances from Spain to the Balkan country.

Bajcetic has represented Spain, the country of his birth, at under-18s level before a breakthrough 2022-23 season at Anfield saw him called up to the under-21s last September.

But a string of injuries in the 18 months before joining Red Bull Salzburg on loan in August has meant the 20-year-old has been unable to add to his one and only cap for Santi Denia’s side.

However, Spanish publication AS claims that Serbia will make a play to try and convince Bajcetic to switch his allegiance to Serbia if he is left out of Denia’s squad on Friday.

Bajcetic is eligible to represent Serbia through his father, Srdan, who played as a midfielder for Celta Vigo, Red Star Belgrade and Braga during the 1990s and early 2000s. As Bajcetic has only played for Spain’s under-21s, FIFA laws state he would be eligible to switch his national allegiance to Serbia.

Since reuniting with former Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders at Salzburg, the former Celta Vigo youngster has made 10 appearances for the Austrian outfit – with three of those coming in Champions League games against Sparta Prague, Brest and Dinamo Zagreb.

However, the midfielder did miss Salzburg’s 3-1 win at Feyenoord on Wednesday night through illness, though former Liverpool midfielder Bobby Clark played 90 minutes as Salzburg claimed a first European win of the season.
