Liverpool have secured Champions League qualification for next season following Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-0 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge tonight.
The Reds have now mathematically qualified to be in Europe’s Premier competition next season after a season playing Europa League football.
Liverpool’s Europa League season came to an end after suffering a 3-1 aggregate defeat at the hands of Atalanta in April.
The month was a forgettable one for the Reds as not only did their Europa League title ambitions crash and burn, but they also fell out of the Premier League title race.
Everything had looked perfect to give manager Jurgen Klopp a glorious send-off after he announced he would leave the club at the end of the season.
Liverpool won the EFL Cup, defeating Chelsea 1-0 in the final and claiming the first available trophy. They continued to build momentum, but they began to falter in April.
After crashing out of the FA Cup at the hands of archrivals Manchester United in March, the wheels began to come off after a 2-2 PL draw with United at Old Trafford. Europa League exit followed.
The Merseyside club struggled in front of goal against Crystal Palace and paid the price as the Eagles claimed a 1-0 win at Anfield.
Liverpool also lost the Merseyside derby to Everton at Goodison Park before stuttering against West Ham United in their last game.
Klopp’s men have fallen five points behind Arsenal and four behind Manchester City in the Premier League with three games to go, and the feeling is that they are out of the running.
However, it is not all doom and gloom. Liverpool have secured a trophy and now Champions League football.
Incoming manager Arne Slot will have a shot at claiming the prestigious title next season. Despite falling short in the PL title race, the Reds should be proud they have secured CL football with three games to go.
The focus now shifts to building a strong challenge for next season.
