Liverpool are ‘vigilant about the possibility’ ahead of the January transfer window as injury risks rise.
The Reds currently have seven first-team players unavailable for selection due to fitness issues. Joel Matip will miss the rest of the 2023/24 season with a torn cruciate ligament, while Andy Robertson will not return until the New Year after recovering from shoulder surgery.
Midfielders Thiago and Stefan Bajcetic are also long-term absentees, having played less than a minute this season. Ryan Gravenbirch and Alexis McAllister are suffering from less serious problems but are not expected to play for the Reds in the next few games, while Diogo Jota is still working his way back to fitness after picking up an injury in last month’s 1-1 draw.
City of Manchester.Jurgen Klopp has publicly played down the possibility of Liverpool signing him when the transfer window reopens next month, but the Daily Mail report that the Reds are open to signing him “if the price is right”.
Looking at the scoreline, it can be seen that there is a clear lack of depth in defense and midfield. The club is therefore “looking for opportunities” and is particularly focused on the Portuguese market.
Liverpool’s hierarchy met last week to discuss plans for the January transfer window. The Mail claims the Reds’ plans hinge on finding value in players from clubs who have been relegated from the Champions League or failed to progress in Europe.
The name of regular defender Goncalo Inacio will be confirmed. His current club Sporting CP are top of the Portuguese league and qualified for the Europa League qualification play-offs before the end of the January transfer window.
A separate report in Portugal suggests the Liverpool scout could be worth around £52m after the defender scored twice in the 3-0 win over Sturm Graz last Thursday.
