—For the third time this season Duke junior Aidan Maguire has been named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
The short-stick defensive midfielder had a career day while leading the 12th-ranked Blue Devils to a 12-7 win at No. 16 Boston University. Maguire anchored a stellar defensive performance by the Blue Devils, scoring a career-high two goals, picking up a career-best eight ground balls and causing three turnovers.
Maguire, returning to his home state for the first time in his career, was instrumental in the Blue Devils holding the Terriers scoreless for at least 10 minutes three times in the game. The scoring droughts of 17:39 (3rd-4th) 14:49 (1st-2nd) and 13:45 (1st), marked the 11th,12th and 13th times this season Duke had held an opponent without a goal for at least 10 minutes.
The Hingham, Massachusetts native capped Duke’s 5-0 run in the second quarter with a transition score. He also added the Blue Devils’ final goal of the game for his fourth goal of the year.
Leading the ACC in caused turnovers per game and ranking sixth in ground balls, Maguire has multiple caused turnovers in eight of 12 games this season and has also picked up at least three ground balls in nine of 12 games.
The No. 12 Blue Devils (9-3) return to ACC play Saturday against No. 7 North Carolina. Faceoff is set for 4 p.m., on ACC Network.
