Man City make unwanted history before playing Liverpool with ‘disastrous’ collapse

The scare of Manchester City hitting an unbeatable and dominant stride continued to lessen for Liverpool fans after drawing 3-3 to Feyenoord with a 3-goal lead in the 74 minutes. Premier League legends and commentators were at a loss of words for the collapse as the reigning champions entered the matchup following a fifth straight defeat.

City became the first team in Champions League history to hold a lead by three goals after 75 minutes and not win. Feyenoord scored three goals in 15 minutes from Anis Hadj Moussa, Santiago Gimenez, and David Hancko, with the latter coming with just one minute left in the game.

Erling Haaland struck twice, including a coolly converted penalty, while Ilkay Gundogan added a third. At halftime, it seemed City was flowing and re-gaining its footing to bounce back from a chain of rough results and transform back into last year’s form.

Liverpool supporters basking in City’s recent susceptibility went on social media to roast the team’s result. Both sides will collide in the Reds next Premier League matchup on Dec 1 at Anfield.

Alan Shearer was left stunned by the collapse. “Wow. They should have killed the game and tried to hold a high line. Brilliant from Feyenoord hoping that they are going to cave in under the pressure and that’s what has happened,” he said on Amazon Prime.

“Disastrous. They have got about four or five minutes to rescue it.” Shearer said City looked “weak, light, and frail” in the matchup. He blamed the team for the loss, saying they “killed the game.”

“What you cannot do is give them a little bit of hope. That is what they did. Even with two minutes to go and 3-2 up, they take a quick free-kick. Why? Kill the game,” he said. “They were in such a comfortable position.”

Former England midfielder Andros Townsend worked the game on BBC Radio 5 Live and said, “I’m lost for words. It wasn’t vintage Manchester City, but they were cruising.” He called City’s performance a “comical defensive error from Josko Gvardiol that allowed Feyenoord back into the game.” Like Sherear, he criticized the club’s decision to play such a high line late in the match.

“In the end, all that hard work from City is undone,” he continued.”And the pressure now mounts even more ahead of the Premier League game against Liverpool.”

Liverpool remain atop the Premier League table and are clear of City by eight points. While the Reds remained undefeated in November through five contests, City played to losses against Tottenham twice, Brighton, Sporting, and Bournemouth.
