Michael Edwards’ Liverpool transfer heroics and breakdown of £270m profit he made

Michael Edwards is returning to Liverpool owner Fenway Sports Group, with the 44-year-old having been a key figure in the Reds’ transfer business during his first spell at Anfield.

During his previous 10-year stint, he made a whopping £270m profit for the Reds by buying and selling players at just the right time. One of his most notable deals was selling Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in January 2018.

 

However, there were many other genius transfer deals that helped generate extra resources for Jurgen Klopp and Co. Daily Star Sport has taken a look at some of those moments of brilliance in the transfer market.

Despite being a key player for Liverpool since his £8.5m move from Inter Milan, Edwards decided to sell him when Barcelona made a record-breaking £142m bid. This deal alone netted Liverpool a cool £133.5m profit, reports the Mirror.

 

Another profitable deal was the sale of French defender Mamadou Sakho to Crystal Palace. Originally bought for £18m from Paris Saint-Germain, Sakho was sold for £26m, securing an £8m profit for the Reds.

Edwards has shown a knack for making big bucks from selling strikers during his time at Liverpool. Taiwo Awoniyi, Rhian Brewster, Danny Ings and Dominic Solanke were all bought for just under £12m in total, but sold for a combined £70m.

Liverpool have also made a tidy sum from their academy players. Right-back Andre Wisdom was sold to Derby for £4.5m, while Kevin Stewart fetched an £8m fee when he moved to Hull. More of Liverpool’s bright young things were sold off too. Ryan Kent went to Rangers for £7.5m, and Harry Wilson’s move to Fulham brought in £12m.

 

The deals kept rolling in as Kamil Grabara, Herbie Kane, Ovie Ejaria netted Liverpool about £8m altogether. Edwards also made some serious cash from a few of his bargain buys.

Marko Grujic was Jurgen Klopp’s first signing for Liverpool, coming from Red Star Belgrade for £5m. He didn’t quite cut it at Anfield, but was still sold to Portuguese heavyweights Porto for £10.5m.

Goalie Danny Ward and defender Ki-Jana Hoever were also sold during Edwards’ first stint, bringing in a hefty profit for Liverpool. Ward was bought from Wrexham for a mere £100k, while Hoever was signed from Ajax in a £90k deal.

 

The duo were later sold for hefty fees, with Ward moving to Leicester in a £12.5m deal in 2018, and Hoever joining Wolves for £13.5m.
