New Orleans Saints rookie quarterback Tyler Shough labeled a ‘disaster’ if he can’t win starting job

While the New Orleans Saints might be destined for another 5-12 season, they might have stunted their growth as a team by drafting Tyler Shough with their second-round pick.

Shough, who is going to be 26 in September, has an advantage over fellow quarterback Spencer Rattler because he is older and he played in college for a long time.

He’s as experienced as a rookie can be.

Then the team drafted him so high at No. 40 overall that the average fan expects someone drafted this high must be in line for the starting job.

Locked on NFL’s Tyler Rowland and I share the same opinion on Shough.

“We can talk about how Tyler Shough has an advantage because he was the guy drafted by the current regime, that’s great, but Tyler Shough should have an advantage because he’s older, as well I mean, he’s older than Spencer Rattler- Spencer Rattler is going to be 25 in September, where Shough is going to go up to 26. So like to me it would be an outright disaster if shough could not beat out rattler even with shough being a rookie because you drafted a quarterback this old who had been in college for seven years, he backed up Justin Herbert at Oregon that’s how long Tyler Shough has been in college,” Rowland said.

The reason you draft a guy like that in the second round is because they’re ready to play right away and there’s uncertainty with Derek Carr, the uncertainty with Derek Carr turned into worse case scenario or maybe it turned into best case scenario really when you look at the financial ramifications for the Saints, maybe that was what was best for them going forward, but you draft tyler shough because he’s a guy who’s got a ton of experience seven years in college, he’s going to be 26, like this is a guy who should be able to go on the field right away and they clearly didn’t believe in Spencer Rattler that much because they went and paid what they paid for Tyler Shough. So if Rattler beats out Shough and you have to clearly admit that this guy we didn’t draft beat out the guy we did believe in that would be a disaster and with Shough being so old he should be

This is going to be a bad season anyway, and as I have said before, if you’re going to be bad, then be bad. But don’t force it.

Rattler potentially winning the starting job and looking decent throughout a bad season might give the Saints enough trade fodder to trade up higher than the No. 3 overall pick that the Saints are projected to end up with.

That is, if this plan for the Saints to draft former Hall of Fame quarterback Archie Manning’s grandson, Arch Manning, doesn’t pan out.
