For the Duke Blue Devils, being at the top of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) conversation is nothing new. With the start of the 2025–26 NCAA basketball season fast approaching, Duke, ranked No. 6 in the nation, once again stands as the team to beat in a league brimming with talent and tradition.
Under the guidance of Head Coach Jon Scheyer, the Blue Devils are not only chasing another ACC crown but also seeking a return to national championship contention. Their mixture of seasoned returnees and rising young stars has made them the consensus favorite in preseason predictions — even in a field that includes powerful rivals No. 11 Louisville and No. 25 North Carolina.
Boozer Leads a Deep, Disciplined Duke Squad
Sophomore forward Cameron Boozer, already a household name in college basketball, continues to set the tone for the Blue Devils. Boozer’s combination of athleticism, court vision, and maturity was on full display in Duke’s 89–61 preseason victory over Central Florida on October 21, where he dictated tempo and dominated both ends of the court.
Alongside Boozer, Duke boasts one of the most balanced rosters in the nation. Guards Tyrese Proctor and Caleb Foster headline a backcourt rich in creativity and shooting efficiency. Their ability to stretch the floor complements the interior strength of Mark Mitchell and Khaman Maluach, the latter being a freshman already drawing national attention for his rim protection and rebounding prowess.
Scheyer, who enters his third full season since succeeding the legendary Mike Krzyzewski, has instilled a team-first mentality that emphasizes ball movement, defensive pressure, and resilience.
> “We’re not just trying to win games — we’re building habits that win championships,” Scheyer said after the win against UCF. “This group understands that every possession matters.”
Louisville’s Resurgence, Carolina’s Quest for Redemption
Duke’s biggest challengers come from familiar corners.
At Louisville, Head Coach Kenny Payne has orchestrated a remarkable turnaround. With key transfers and a rejuvenated defensive approach, the Cardinals are poised to make a serious push for the ACC title. Their energy and athleticism have made them one of the most feared transition teams in the country.
Meanwhile, North Carolina, ranked No. 25, is rebuilding with purpose under Hubert Davis. Led by senior guard RJ Davis, the Tar Heels are focusing on rediscovering the consistency that once defined their championship pedigree.
As always, the Duke–North Carolina rivalry remains one of the sport’s greatest spectacles — and this season, their matchups could carry even greater implications in both the ACC race and national rankings.
A Deep and Competitive ACC Field
Beyond the traditional powerhouses, the ACC is as competitive as ever.
Virginia, under Tony Bennett, continues to rely on its trademark suffocating defense, while Miami brings pace and flair to the court. Clemson, too, has quietly emerged as a dark horse contender thanks to its balanced scoring and improved rebounding.
Analysts predict that this could be one of the most wide-open ACC seasons in years. Yet, when it comes to consistency, coaching, and talent depth, Duke still stands a step ahead.
Eyes Firmly Set on March Glory
While conference dominance remains a major goal, Duke’s ambitions clearly extend beyond ACC borders. After last season’s early NCAA Tournament exit, the Blue Devils are motivated to reclaim their place among college basketball’s elite.
With Boozer’s leadership, Scheyer’s tactical mastery, and a bench full of capable contributors, the Blue Devils appear well-equipped to go deep into March.
> “Our focus isn’t on where we start,” Scheyer remarked. “It’s on where we finish. We want to be playing our best basketball when it matters most.”
The Road Ahead
As the new season tips off, one truth stands firm — the ACC remains Duke’s domain until proven otherwise. Yet, with Louisville’s rise, North Carolina’s revival, and several programs knocking on the door, the path to another conference title will demand excellence every night.
In a league where history, pride, and talent collide, Duke once again finds itself in a familiar position — at the center of attention, carrying both the weight of expectation and the promise of greatness.
