While the Oklahoma Sooners football program attempts to turn things around after a bad 2024 season, the baseball program is having a pretty decent season. They are getting closer to the end of the season with a projection of playing in the Clemson Regional.
They have a legitimate chance of going to Super Regionals and maybe even the College World Series, if they can clean some stuff up. The biggest stage is near, and the world will finally get to see one of the best players in the country that no one is talking about. The Sooners have a pretty good roster on paper in certain areas of their team. But when you look at a few of the players on the pitching staff, it’s obvious this group has a ton of potential to be elite.And it all starts with Kyson Witherspoon.
He posts every week. I think he’s had one bad outing, and again, I’m not going off the stats. I’m a traditional stout. I scout the tools, but I mean, the guy touches 98, he throws 95, he maintains his velocity. He’s got a plus slider, at times it’s even better, he throws it for strikes two-thirds of the time, he’s got a change-up that he doesn’t use very much, I think it’s a split change, but he doesn’t use it very much, but it’s really good too. So you know there are three legitimate pitches. I know he has a fourth one in his bag as well. I think he was seen as a first-rounder coming into the year, and he said nothing to dispel that. He’s a top half of the first rounder. Now four-pitcher, strikes, athletic, and best of all, for this guy, like his makeup off the charts, competitive, hard working, great human being. “There’s nothing to not like about Kyson Witherspoon.”Witherspoon has completely taken over at times this year. There have been games where it’s clear he is the best player in the entire series, and he just controls everything the other team does because his pitching is that good.
He started his college career at Northwest Florida State College in 2023, posting a 3.10 ERA with 72 strikeouts in 69.2 innings. In 2024, after transferring to Oklahoma, he went 8-3 with a 3.71 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 80 innings. In 2025, he’s been even better, with a 2.12 ERA and 112 strikeouts in 83.1 innings, earning honors like SEC Pitcher of the Week.
Scouts like his fastball and slider, and his changeup is improving. His delivery is deceptive, but he needs to work on his command. Despite a brief injury in 2025, he’s seen as a late first-round or early second-round draft pick. And, it just feels like Witherspoon is not getting the attention he deserves. He could be the next great Oklahoma athlete who goes professional in his respective sport.
