Omar Marmoush has sent a clear message to Liverpool after equalling a record previously held by Lionel Messi. The Reds have been heavily linked with a move for the Eintracht Frankfurt star over the last few weeks, with the rumours seemingly intensifying in recent days.
Marmoush has scored 14 goals with 10 assists in all competitions for Frankfurt this season. It’s that form that has led to the Egypt international being linked with a move away from the Bundesliga club, with Bayern Munich also supposedly interested
Sunday saw Marmoush get his 14th goal of the season in a 3-2 win over Stuttgart. The 25-year-old found the back of the net with a sublime free-kick that beat Stuttgart goalkeeper Alexander Nubel.
In the process, Marmoush equalled a record that was previously set by Messi. The Frankfurt star’s goal against Stuttgart was the third time that he scored from a direct free-kick in as many competitive matches, according to Opta.
Marmoush had previously scored free-kicks against Bochum in the Bundesliga and Slavia Prague in the Europa League. The last time a player scored a direct free-kick in three successive matches was Messi for Barcelona across March and April of 2019.
Reports in recent weeks have claimed that Frankfurt may need an offer worth up to €60 million (£50 million) to allow Marmoush to leave the club either in the January transfer window or next summer. Frankfurt signed the talented playmaker on a free transfer in the summer of 2023 following his exit from Wolfsburg.
It remains to be seen if Liverpool’s reported interest in Marmoush turns out to be genuine. The Reds may have the advantage over their rivals in a deal to sign Marmoush, with some reports suggesting that the forward may want to link up with his international teammate, Mohamed Salah, whose contract at Anfield is currently set to expire at the end of the season
