Former West Virginia University football player and media personality Pat McAfee shared insights on the search for WVU’s next head coach during The Pat McAfee Show on Monday. Following the firing of Neal Brown, McAfee revealed that the role has already drawn significant interest.
“It was a wild day yesterday,” McAfee said. “A lot of people want that job.”
McAfee disclosed that he received calls from multiple individuals seeking his support for their candidacies. He also expressed confidence in WVU Athletic Director Wren Baker, praising Baker’s decision-making skills and track record, particularly in hiring for the men’s basketball team.
“I have faith in him. There are a lot of options out there, and that’s just based on the conversations I had yesterday,” McAfee said, emphasizing the growing pool of potential candidates.
While speculation about big-name coaches swirls, McAfee addressed rumors surrounding former Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban, a West Virginia native. McAfee said Saban declined interest in the position but offered his assistance in identifying a suitable candidate.
“I don’t think he’s getting back into coaching,” McAfee remarked. “I’ve asked him 1,000 times if he’s coming to coach West Virginia. He said no, but I do believe he’s interested in helping West Virginia.”
McAfee also supported Baker’s decision to part ways with Neal Brown, highlighting the program’s opportunity for growth within the Big 12. “In a P4 program like the Big 12, with an automatic playoff bid, it’s as wide open as it is. Wren Baker knew he had to make this move,” McAfee concluded.
The next hire for WVU’s football program is poised to be a pivotal moment as the team looks to capitalize on its position in the evolving college football landscape.
