Anthony Taylor’s decision not to show Joelinton a yellow card for a foul on Dominic Szoboszlai sparked controversy during Liverpool’s win over Newcastle United.Professional Game Match Officers Limited (PGMOL) have explained how Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton avoided a yellow card in the first half against Liverpool. Referee Anthony Taylor sparked controversy at Anfield when he decided not to caution the Brazilian despite tripping Dominik Szoboszlai during a Liverpool attack.
Taylor took advantage and allowed the Reds to go on the attack but drew the fire of the Anfield crowd when he failed to show Joelinton a yellow card at the next stoppage time. Several Liverpool players also expressed their displeasure with the referee.Liverpool’s frustration grew when Joelinton was not punished for his tackle on Luis Diaz and was instead booked for his troubles in Colombia. The Newcastle star was booked for a challenge on Ibrahima Konate in the second half. Jurgen Klopp was quick to express his displeasure with referee Andy Madeley, who said it should have been a second yellow card rather than the first. However, PGMOL has now commented on Taylor’s original decision.
The organization spoke to the ECHO about Joelinton’s foul on Soboszlai and explained why the Brazilian avoided a yellow card. Article 12 of the Law on Disciplinary Penalties states the following: “If play is stopped and the referee has the benefit of a caution/send-off foul, then such caution/send-off must be given the next time the ball is out of play.”However, if a foul denies the opponent the opportunity to score, the player will be cautioned for unsportsmanlike conduct. If a foul prevents or stops a future attack, the player will not be warned.”
