Liverpool are ready to accelerate contract negotiations with centre-back Ibrahima Konate.Konate has been a fantastic signing since joining RB Leipzig in 2021.
He has two and a half years left on his contract, but the Reds are keen to keep him locked up for more years. At least this is reported by the French publication Le10Sport.
They claim they have exclusive news that Liverpool’s managers have begun talks with Connat’s representatives over a contract extension. During the discussion, it was stated that there was no “emergency”.
But the Reds want the 24-year-old’s case to be “resolved” in the coming weeks. Here, Liverpool will hope to reach an agreement for the number five before the end of the season.
Konate’s extension is both a “reward” for his form since joining the club and a “deterrent” to other clubs who may be interested in the centre-back. In fact, Le10Sport has suggested that PSG are one of the teams interested in Konate. However, Liverpool will be hoping to secure the Frenchman’s future with a new deal.
Liverpool have opened talks with Konate
This is certainly good news for Liverpool. With more than two years left on his contract, the Reds may be in no rush to get something out of it.
But as always, it is better to do everything right and on time. The situation could be resolved quickly as clubs like PSG are rumored to be interested in Konate and the player himself has made these claims public.
The closer to a player’s expiration date, the more intense the conversation can become. Then an exit begins to seem inevitable. From Liverpool’s point of view, they are generally very good and try not to let their contracts expire.
It is true that many big players have left Anfield on free transfers, but that has always been on Liverpool’s terms. They usually sign a player to a five-year contract, offer him a new contract after two or three years and then release him.
That pattern looks set to continue for Konat, who is now set for a significant pay rise. Having arrived at the club with a lot to prove, the Frenchman is now a key figure in Jurgen Klopp’s squad. His last start was last week away at Sheffield United, which Klopp praised as “fantastic”.
With Liverpool’s centre-back positions changing, Konate should play a bigger role for some time. Although still young, Ibu has the potential to stay at Anfield for many years.
