Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has warned Jurgen Klopp that his defense will pose a huge challenge ahead of their crucial clash with Manchester City.
After struggling with a shaky defense last season, the Merseyside club were believed to be looking to strengthen their defense last summer.
However, they failed to land a defender by deadline day and decided to revamp their engine room by signing four new midfielders.
Liverpool have made a promising start to the season with 27 points from 12 games, one point behind leaders Manchester City. So it looks like the Reds will be on the offensive for the title this season.
However, while Klopp’s side started well, they showed signs of weakness at the back. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s weaknesses in defense were evident last season, so Klopp decided to switch positions and deploy him at full-back.
Now Carragher has written in the Telegraph that his biggest concern for Liverpool against Manchester City is at right-back, with Alexander-Arnold not doing well in his defensive role.
The pundit went on to say that Luton Town tried to hurt Liverpool and Manchester City could do the same.
Carragher wrote:”Klopp and his coaching staff have a tactical puzzle that will determine their performance against teams of City’s class: finding the right balance between Trent’s attacking and defensive duties.
My concern is that this is not true even for the weaker parties.Liverpool’s last Premier League game was against Luton Town, but they were held to a draw.
Luton’s best player on the day was Kiedoji Ogbene, who was tasked with attacking Liverpool’s left space from the first whistle.”Coach Guardiola is focused on that. It is no coincidence that Grealish produced his best performance for Manchester City against Liverpool last April.
When he beat Alexander-Arnold one-on-one, he enjoyed the space and time he was given on the left. And Doku is one of the most skilful players in the Premier League and he likes to isolate himself from defenders.
“Liverpool lost 4-1 to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium last season and will be looking to avenge that defeat this weekend. However, it will be interesting to see how Saturday’s game plays out as it will be very difficult for Klopp’s side to beat the Citizens.
