The Indiana Hoosiers hope they’ve finally found the head coach who will make them a national powerhouse in men’s basketball again.
On Tuesday, Indiana hired West Virginia’s Darian DeVries as its 31st coach. ESPN’s Pete Thamel and Jeff Borzello reported the 49-year-old will receive a six-year deal.
DeVries is replacing Mike Woodson, who announced he would step down in February. In four seasons in Bloomington, Woodson went 82-53. However, he fell out of favor after missing the NCAA Tournament for two straight seasons.
He also never made it past the second round of the Big Dance during his tenure.
Creighton HC Greg McDermott — who has made 10 NCAA Tournament trips with the Bluejays — believes his former assistant can provide the reboot the program needs. Of course, DeVries was on McDermott’s staff from 2010-18.”
[DeVries] is a grinder. His tireless work ethic and passion for bringing out the best in his players is unmatched,” McDermott texted Field of 68 co-founder Jeff Goodman. “He is an outside-of-the-box thinker on both ends of the floor. Indiana hit a home run.”In one season at West Virginia, DeVries went 19-13 and just missed the NCAA Tournament. The season prior, the Mountaineers went 9-23.
In six seasons at Drake, DeVries went 150-55, guided the Bulldogs to three NCAA Tournament appearances and won two Missouri Valley Conference Tournament titles.
According to Goodman, DeVries’ son, Tucker, is expected to transfer to Indiana. He played in eight games in 2024 because of a shoulder injury but was MVC Player of the Year twice in three seasons at Drake.
