Rival coach has some advice for Saints HC Kellen Moore in his first year on the job

The NFC South has seen some turnover in the coaching department recently. Last year, Dave Canales and Raheem Morris were the new kids on the divisional block. Just a year later and they’re no longer the most recent hirings in the division.

Kellen Moore is preparing for his first season leading the New Orleans Saints. Canales offered Moore some advice during his interview with Kay Adams. Of the NFC South coaches, Canales is best equipped to hand out advice because he was in the same boat last year. He and Moore are the only first-time head coaches of the quartet, and Canales is fresh off his first season.

Canales told Moore: “First and foremost, you’re going to get it done. Doesn’t seem like there’s enough time in the day, but you’ll figure it out. Use your help. Use the people who are smarter than you in different areas to really be a support for you that way.”

Those pieces of advice work together, and Moore is already setting up to use his help. Moore brought in Brandon Staley as his defensive coordinator. That’s a former head coach leading your defense. If Moore wants to lean more into his expertise, opposed to being a helicopter coach, he knows Staley can hold down defensive side of the ball without supervision.

Moore filled the offensive staff with coaches he has familiarity with, most notably Doug Nussmeier. Youth is a theme for many coaches on offense, but Moore having experience with them should give him the trust to defer when necessary.

It’s good advice from Canales, and it’s the point of a coaching staff. It’ll be on Moore to lean on them. So far, it appears he’s built a staff he’d be willing defer to when the time comes.
