According to The Independent, as well as Liverpool, Manchester City, Barcelona and PSG are also keen on the 21-year-old. Musiala has scored 43 times and assisted another 30 goals in 159 appearances at senior level for Bayern Munich after moving there from Chelsea in 2019 in search of a better route to first-team football.

Manchester City, the report says, is leading the way in terms of signing Musiala. The player would prefer a move back to England should he depart rather than heading to France or Spain. Barcelona would be highly unlikely to be able to afford him regardless given the financial situation of the La Liga outfit. Its spending has been curbed for a number of years and that won’t change yet.

Musiala has been linked with Liverpool before and has been spoken about as a possible successor for Mohamed Salah. He would cost, as a minimum, a sum north of $100m (£80m/€93m), even though his contract only runs until 2026 as things stand.

But FSG did show a willingness to go big last summer when it made a bid of much more than that for. While the Ecuadorian ended up at Chelsea, Liverpool did go big for him at the time.

According to the Portuguese journalist Pedro Sepúlveda, Sporting’s technical director Hugo Viana could move to Liverpool as well as Amorim. Newcastle United, looking for a replacement for Dan Ashworth, is also considering Viana.

Liverpool has already brought back Michael Edwards (as FSG’s CEO of football) and employed Richard Hughes as sporting director. But there could be more behind-the-scenes appointments as the post-Klopp era takes shape.
