The New Orleans Saints are embarking on a mew chapter of their franchise with former Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore taking over as head coach.
Moore — who has been mentioned in head coaching searches over the last several years after successful stints leading the Cowboys, Chargers and Eagles offenses — is inheriting a roster filled with aging veterans and almost no salary cap space to add new talent.
Last season, Moore was the architect behind one of the most dynamic offenses in the NFL as he helped lead the Eagles to a Super Bowl victory. But that Philly roster was loaded with talent on both sides of the ball that the New Orleans Saints don’t have.
The new Saints coach will have to find a way to put together a potent offense without Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, AJ Brown, Devonta Smith and one of the best offensive lines in the NFL. Instead, Moore will have to lean on playmakers like RB Alvin Kamara and WR Chris Olave, with a
Last week, it was reported that the Saints are restructuring QB Derek Carr‘s contract to open up $30.9 million in 2025 cap space, which certainly helps.
The Saints plan to convert Carr’s $30 million base salary and $10 million guaranteed roster bonus to a signing bonus, lowering his 2025 cap figure to $20.4 million.
Restructuring Carr’s contract ties him to the Saints for at least the 2025 season and increases his 2026 cap figure to $69.2 million in the final season of his contract next year.
It feels like even if the plan is to start Carr to begin the 2025 NFL season, the New Orleans Saints need to have a solid backup plan if things go south. Carr has been wildly inconsistent since taking over as the Saints QB. Moore wants to find success as quickly as possible so it’s not crazy to assume the Saints will make a move to bring in another starting-caliber QB.
Carr’s four-year deal, signed in 2023, has two seasons remaining and will expire on the last day of the 2026 league
Keep in mind while they all had different skill sets, the last three QBs Moore worked with were mobile, dual-threat passers. Dak Prescott, Justin Herbert and Jalen Hurts all had the threat of beating defenses with their legs, which helped Moore get innovative as a play caller.
Carr can make throws rolling out of the pocket, but isn’t known as a running quarterback.
All of these factors lead TWSN to believe the New Orleans Saints will trade for Colts QB Anthony Richardson before the start of the 2025 campaign.
