Sebastian Wilkins Duke Basketball Journey Begins with Fresh Drive

Sebastian Wilkins is stepping into the spotlight with Duke Basketball, and the latest Duke Chronicle profile makes one thing clear—he’s ready to stand on his own.

The freshman guard-forward hybrid brings more than just a famous last name. As the son of NBA Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins, comparisons are unavoidable. But Sebastian isn’t interested in living in his father’s shadow. “People will always compare,” he said. “But I’m here to earn my own name. I want Duke fans to know me for my grind, my defense, and how I compete.”

Wilkins chose Duke over offers from several elite programs. He called the decision a blend of basketball tradition and personal fit. “Coach Scheyer believed in me from the start. The staff made me feel like this is where I’ll grow as a player and a man,” Wilkins shared.

At 6’7”, Wilkins offers versatility. He can guard multiple positions, score in transition, and stretch the floor. But what stands out most is his approach to learning. He studies film relentlessly and works on his weaknesses before practice begins. Teammates say his focus is contagious. Coaches love his communication and leadership, even as a freshman.

He’s been vocal in workouts, unafraid to hold himself accountable, and eager to adjust. “The transition to college hoops is no joke,” he said. “But I embrace pressure. I embrace hard coaching. That’s how you grow.”

The Duke Chronicle piece also dives into his personal motivations. Wilkins said his family supports him but never pressures him to chase legacy. “My dad tells me, ‘Be better than me. Be you.’ That’s what pushes me.”
