They Misspelled My Name—Then Said ‘Go Duke’ as I Got Arrested”: Why PJ Hairston Can’t Stand the Blue Devils

Duke and UNC often recruit the same players and that was the case, at least for awhile, Tar Heel PJ Hairston.

He said that he got letters from Duke with his name misspelled and took great offense to that, saying that he felt Duke ought to at least get his name right if the Blue Devils were interested in his playing in Cameron.

It wasn’t the end of Hairston’s distaste for Duke, however.

In 2013, Hairston’s career came to an abrupt end when he was arrested for weapons and drug charges. Those charges were dismissed as was Hairston himself as Ol’ Roy Williams booted him from the team after this happened.

In this story, Hairston talks about being arrested that night and why an officer made him hate Duke even more. Check it out:”So he ended up arresting me. Whoever’s in the car with me, put me in the back of the car. Motherf***er looks at me right before he closes the door and says, ‘Go Duke.’”

”So people wonder why I have such a hatred for them blue motherf***ers. That’s why. This motherf***er said, ‘Go Duke.”

Now look.

You don’t have to like Hairston or UNC, and it’s not the most intelligent response by PJ, but you have to admit, this is funny. It adds a whole new sense to the simple phrase “Go Duke,” and how that might have rubbed Hairston the wrong way.
