OKLAHOMA CITY — With a trip to the Women’s College World Series finals hanging in the balance, Oklahoma head coach Patty Gasso didn’t mince words ahead of her team’s high-stakes matchup against Texas Tech. “We’re fighting for our lives now,” Gasso said Sunday, as her Sooners prepare for the possibility of facing one of the nation’s most dominant pitchers, NiJaree Canady.
The Sooners (52-8), a powerhouse program accustomed to championship expectations, face a double-elimination scenario in the WCWS semifinals and must defeat Texas Tech (52-12) twice on Monday to advance. The first game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. CT at Devon Park in Oklahoma City.
Much of the buzz surrounds Canady, the Red Raiders’ ace and one of the most feared arms in college softball. With a low ERA, explosive velocity, and surgical control, she has the tools to silence even the most dangerous lineups — including Oklahoma’s.
“She’s special,” Gasso said of Canady. “You have to be disciplined, patient, and aggressive at the same time. It’s not easy, but this is what championship-level softball is all about.”
Gasso emphasized the importance of experience and resilience, particularly with such a young Sooner roster on the field this season. Despite their youth, the Sooners have maintained the tradition of excellence, reaching the WCWS semifinals for a ninth consecutive year.
“There’s no more waiting around,” Gasso added. “It’s go-time. This group may be young, but they’ve grown up fast. Now they’ve got to put it all together under the pressure of elimination softball.”
The Sooners will counter with Landry in the circle, hoping she can keep the Red Raiders in check long enough for Oklahoma’s offense to find a rhythm. If the Sooners can secure a win in the first game, it will set up a winner-take-all second contest later in the evening.
With everything on the line, Gasso and her squad are leaning into the mentality that has made Oklahoma softball a dynasty — grit, focus, and belief. “This is the kind of moment we talk about all year long. Now we’re in it. Now it’s about how badly you want it.”
Win or go home. For Patty Gasso and the Sooners, it’s time to dig deep — and maybe, make a little more history along the way.
