“Why Duke’s Cameron Boozer—Not BYU’s AJ Dybantsa—Could Be the Freshman Who Dominates College Basketball in 2025”
Incoming freshman Cameron Boozer may lack the highlight-reel athleticism of top BYU recruit AJ Dybantsa, but basketball analysts believe the Duke-bound forward’s consistency and versatility make him the best bet for freshman success.
During a recent “Field of 68” podcast discussion, experts debated which elite 2025 prospect would have the most productive first college season. Boozer emerged as the surprising favorite over flashier players who dominate recruiting headlines and social media feeds.
Analyst Chooses Cameron Boozer Over Consensus Number One Pick AJ Dybantsa As Top Freshman
During the “Field of 68” podcast discussion between analysts Ani Umana and Shu Negga, the latter clarified his preference when asked to predict the best 2025 freshman season. “I’m gonna go, Cam[eron] Boozer. I think he has a chance to be a first-team All-American.”
Negga pointed to Boozer’s proven track record at every level of competition. “He’s a winner. I know this isn’t high school anymore, but [his championship experience], you know, [his success], he’s versatile with his offensive game, can shoot it, makes free throws,” he explained.
Beyond scoring ability, the analyst emphasized qualities that often get overlooked in recruiting rankings. Boozer possesses a complete offensive arsenal and fundamental excellence that should translate seamlessly to Duke’s system. “I could see him average a double-double this season, and yeah, I mean I just think he just has such a high floor,” Negga said.
When pressed on why he favored Boozer over other elite prospects, the expert doubled down on his selection. “I’mma bank on the winner as someone that has won at all levels, and so Cam Boozer is my pick at having the best freshman season,” the analyst declared.
Boozer’s resume includes elite international performances that demonstrate his ability against top competition. He earned MVP honors at the 2024 FIBA U17 World Cup after averaging 20.1 points and 9.9 rebounds per game.
Most recently, at the 2025 Nike Hoop Summit, Boozer dominated with 22 points and a record-setting 16 rebounds while helping Team USA secure an overtime victory against the world’s best international prospects.
Analyst Says Duke Star’s Complete Skill Set Sets Him Apart From Flashier Prospects
The analysts highlighted specific abilities that distinguish Boozer from more athletic but less polished players. “He finishes inside, has a soft touch, can stretch the floor, he can attack both ways, he just can finish, he rebounds, he’s a fantastic outlet passer,” Negga detailed.
High basketball IQ emerged as another separator in Boozer’s favor. The expert praised his court awareness and impact that extends beyond traditional statistics. “He moves better laterally than people have realized. I just think his floor is so high, and I think his ceiling is higher than people want to give credit,” they noted.
These observations align with Boozer’s development trajectory. His defensive improvements and passing vision have transformed him from a talented scorer into a complete player. That versatility makes him particularly valuable for Duke’s motion offense and switching defensive schemes.
The consistency factor ultimately tipped the scales in Boozer’s favor during the discussion. “He may not have the loud performances like [BYU commit] AJ [Dybantsa] or [Kansas commit] Darryn Peterson has, but I think he’s gonna be so consistent and so productive,” the analyst concluded.
This assessment suggests a larger truth about college basketball success. While Dybantsa and Peterson might generate more Twitter highlights and SportsCenter appearances, Boozer’s reliability and efficiency could translate to more wins, better team chemistry, and ultimately, superior individual recognition when a
wards season arrives.
