Will UNC basketball recruit Maximo Adams, McDonald’s All-American, stay with Tar Heels?

The UNC basketball coaching search continues a week after Hubert Davis was fired as head coach of the Tar Heels.

In addition to uncertainty surrounding that search, the Tar Heels’ current players and recruits remain in limbo, including McDonald’s All-American forward Maximo Adams.

Adams was announced as the first signee in UNC’s 2026 recruiting class on Nov. 19, 2025. It’s unclear if the coaching search will impact Adams’ status with the Tar Heels. Dylan Mingo, a 2026 guard, became the second recruit to commit to UNC on Feb. 17, but he hasn’t signed.

UNC basketball’s official X account (formerly known as Twitter) posted a message of support for Adams ahead of the 2026 McDonald’s Al-American game on Tuesday, March 31: “Maxi repping the Heels tonight.”

An ankle injury in mid-March has sidelined Adams, who didn’t play in the McDonald’s All-American game in Arizona. A top-25 wing according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, the 6-foot-7, 250-pound California native chose the Tar Heels over Michigan State, Texas and Kentucky. He’s No. 21 in the ESPN 100.

Following a knee injury as a sophomore, Adams continued his career at Sierra Canyon and helped the program win a state championship. On the Nike EYBL circuit, Adams averaged 20.5 points and 11.4 rebounds per game, knocking down 52% of his shots, including 42% from 3-point range. A high-level rebounder and finisher at the rim, Adams is a versatile weapon capable of playing multiple positions on the wing or in the post. His mid-range jumper and footwork are among his best traits.
