‘Would love to’: Virgil van Dijk wishes he could take one skill from Joel Matip

When asked which of his Liverpool teammates he would like to call his own, Virgil van Dijk singled out Joel Matip. The Reds captain is really jealous. Virgil van Dijk gave an in-depth interview to France Football this week, and a particularly interesting question was about what qualities he would like his Liverpool teammates to have. Of course, it took some thinking. But ultimately Van Dijk wanted to take what he saw in Joel Matip and call him his own.”It’s not easy [to pick one],” said the Liverpool captain. “Maybe Joel Matip dribbles.

He likes to dribble from behind. “He goes out there and he’s not afraid. He’s not like, ‘If I do that, we might lose the ball.’ “It’s a great opportunity and I definitely want to try it,” he said. This may be Matip’s unique quality that sets him apart from other top defenders. Defenders take the ball deep, forcing opponents to leave their positions to simply swim through and tackle.

This makes Liverpool a free man. Of course, there was a time when Matip scored a stunning goal against Leeds United without anyone interfering, piercing the defense and finishing as a centre-forward. What if Van Dijk could do that too? Liverpool feel a little unstoppable and it’s fair that the Dutchman can’t do everything. He is as complete a central defender as you can see.

Using an ability here and there will at least give your opponent a chance.Fortunately for Liverpool, this is not a skill that will disappear with Matip. Ibrahima Konate is showing more and more that he can do the same with the ball. This is the true successor Manchester United have been waiting for.
