“You shall not pass!”: Whoscored reveal Liverpool star’s impressive stat

Ryan Gravenberch has emerged as a key player for Liverpool under Arne Slot, playing as a number six this season. Slot deployed Gravenberch in this role after Liverpool failed to secure Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi in the summer transfer window.

The Dutch international struggled with inconsistencies and nagging injuries during his first season at Liverpool under legendary manager Jurgen Klopp. However, the change in position allowed him to flourish under the new tactical style of Slot that fits Gravenberch’s profile.

The 22-year-old joined the Reds from Bayern Munich during the midfield revamp in the summer of 2023 under Klopp. He struggled with game time at Bayern, fighting for the starting position against German players in the team.

Then-Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann admitted that he opted to play German players like Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka in midfield. However, the 22-year-old received another golden opportunity to improve his reputation and develop at the top level at Liverpool.

The Reds endured criticism last summer after missing out on Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia during their midfield overhaul. The situation only got worse after the Zubimendi saga until the fans enjoyed the rise of Gravenberch in that role.

Gravenberch’s role as a defensive midfielder has relieved pressure on Liverpool’s recruitment team. The Dutch international’s history as a number six during his Ajax days has proven invaluable for Slot’s system.

According to WhoScored, Liverpool star Gravenberch has made more interceptions than any Premier League player this season, with 23. His ability to read the game and break up opposition play alongside his possessional qualities has transformed Liverpool’s midfield.

The 22-year-old’s performances have stabilized the team, which has won 16 of 18 games across all competitions. Wataru Endo serves as Gravenberch’s deputy, though Liverpool might strengthen their squad in January or the future transfer window.

A signing of a similar profile could allow Gravenberch to rest through rotation and build healthy competition to stay proactive. Slot’s tactical system demands consistency and depth, which will be crucial during a challenging fixture list.
