Liverpool will be looking to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to five points when they host Luton on Wednesday.
Due to the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea next weekend, Jurgen Klopp’s side will face the Hatters at Anfield this midweek. Fresh off the back of Saturday’s 4-1 convincing win at Brentford, the Reds can earn their third successive top-flight victory and move further clear of Arsenal in second – while keeping third-place Manchester City, who face Brentford in their game in hand, on Tuesday, at arm’s length.
As for Luton, they slumped to their second successive defeat as they lost 2-1 at home to Manchester United on Sunday. It was a dogged performance from Rob Edwards’ men, but couldn’t find an equaliser despite pushing late on. The Hatters have not won an away game against a team above them in the Premier League this season, but will hope to change that against Liverpool.
The pair picked up injuries during the weekend win over Brentford and are not expected to be fit for the Wembley clash. Jones, 23, was forced off with a blow to the lower part of his shin in the 4-1 victory.
Jota, 27, suffered a knee injury that is still being assessed. He could be out for up to two months. Darwin Nunez went off as a precaution at the weekend but there’s been no update yet if he’s picked up a serious problem.
Sepp van den Berg has admitted he might have to leave Liverpool at the end of the season after finding his first-team opportunities limited.
The centre-back joined the Reds as a teenager before being handed his senior debut by Jurgen Klopp during the 2019/20 campaign. Van den Berg has, however, failed to make a Premier League appearance at Liverpool, having also been sent out on loan to Preston and Schalke before his move to Mainz last summer.
He has impressed in the Bundesliga this season, scoring the winner against Augsburg last time out. But Van den Berg, whose contract will run out in 2026, has revealed he may need to depart Liverpool this summer.
“If I go back to Liverpool, they might want me to stay,” Van den Berg told Voetbal Nieuws (via The Echo). “If I see that I won’t get much game time, then I might choose to leave. It’s really important to me that I play.
“In previous years, I didn’t feel like I would be starting next to Virgil [van Dijk]. I don’t know yet what my chances will be like next summer. I think I’m doing well. I can handle playing at Liverpool. I can compete. But being a starter is different. Virgil and [Ibrahima] Konate are not easy to beat. I know it will be hard.”
“It wouldn’t surprise me,” said the former Liverpool midfielder when asked if De Zerbi could become Liverpool’s new boss. “I think all the clubs are looking at Roberto.
“In my eyes, he is one of the best coaches in the world. We will see. It’s like a domino effect with these managers at the moment, managers are always under pressure wherever you go. I don’t know if that puts you off going into that after, but that’s just the world we live in.”
