Liverpool planning contract talks with key player

The Reds had enjoyed a successful week having lifted the Carabao Cup and progressed into the FA Cup quarter-finals, but they looked to be heading for a goalless draw at The City Ground on their return to Premier League action.

That was until Nunez headed in Alexis Mac Allister’s cross in the ninth minute of added time, sparking frustration among the Forest players and staff.

The hosts pointed out that Reds goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher had been given the ball to restart the game after a pause for a head injury to Ibrahima Konate, despite the rules stating that it should in fact have been Forest that restarted.

Although there was more than 90 seconds between the restart and Nunez’ goal, Forest were visibly frustrated at referee Paul Tierney’s bizarre decision.

Victory extends Liverpool’s lead at the top to four points, although reigning champions Manchester City could move back to within a point with victory in the Manchester derby on Sunday afternoon.

In the meantime, it has emerged that Liverpool are planning contract talks with one of their key players.

As per Football Insider, the Merseyside outfit will open talks with left-back Andy Robertson this summer with a view to agreeing a contract extension.

With manager Jurgen Klopp set to leave, the report claims that Liverpool will first focus on appointing his replacement, before than looking to tie Robertson down.

The Scot joined the Reds in 2017 and has since made 283 appearances across all competitions, providing 64 assists in the process.

Robertson’s current deal is set to run until the end of the 2025/26 campaign, but the report claims that Liverpool will attempt to tie the 29-year-old down to a new, long-term contract.
